Is Curaçao Safe for Tourists? A Local’s Honest Guide
One of the first questions almost every traveler asks before booking a trip to Curaçao is simple:
“Is Curaçao safe?”
The short answer is yes.
As someone born and raised on the island, I can honestly say that Curaçao is one of the safer Caribbean destinations for visitors. Millions of tourists visit every year and spend their vacation enjoying the beaches, restaurants, and colorful streets without any problems.
But like any destination, there are a few things you should know before you arrive.
The good news? Most of them are easy to avoid.
The Biggest Risk Isn’t Violent Crime
When people hear the word “crime,” they often imagine robberies or violent incidents.
Fortunately, that’s not what most visitors experience in Curaçao.
The biggest issue affecting tourists is opportunistic theft.
That means someone takes advantage of an easy opportunity, such as:
- Leaving a backpack unattended on the beach while swimming.
- Leaving a phone or laptop visible inside a rental car.
- Parking at an isolated beach with valuables inside the vehicle.
These are the situations where most problems occur. They are preventable with a little common sense and are similar to what you’d do in many other popular travel destinations.
Should You Rent a Car?
Absolutely.
In fact, I recommend it Having a rental car is the best way to experience the island beyond the resort areas. You’ll have the freedom to discover beaches, local restaurants, and neighborhoods that organized tours often miss.
Just remember one simple rule:
Never leave valuables inside your car.
Even if you’re only stopping for ten minutes. If you’re carrying luggage on your first or last day, check into your accommodation before heading to the beach. It’s a small change that can save you a lot of trouble.
Are the Beaches Safe?
Yes, the vast majority of beaches are safe and welcoming. However, use a little extra caution at smaller or more remote beaches.
If you arrive somewhere and notice there are only one or two cars in the parking area, don’t leave your valuables unattended while you go swimming.
Popular beaches with other visitors around generally feel very comfortable. If a beach becomes completely empty toward the end of the day, that’s usually a good sign that it’s time to head to your next stop.
Is It Safe to Walk Around Willemstad?
For most visitors, yes.
Areas such as Punda, Otrabanda, Pietermaai, and the waterfront are lively during both the day and evening. Restaurants, cafés, and bars attract both locals and visitors, and it’s common to see people walking around after sunset.
Like in any city, stay aware of your surroundings, keep your valuables secure, and avoid wandering into unfamiliar residential neighborhoods late at night.
Exploring Nature
One thing visitors don’t always expect is how wild parts of Curaçao can be.
Beyond the beaches are hiking trails, national parks, and rugged coastal landscapes that are perfect for exploring.
The biggest risk here isn’t crime—it’s getting lost. Some trails aren’t clearly marked, cell service can be inconsistent in certain areas, and the Caribbean sun can be intense.
If you’re planning to explore:
- Tell someone where you’re going.
- Bring plenty of water.
- Wear proper shoes.
- Start your hike early in the day.
- Don’t rely solely on your sense of direction.
What About the Locals?
One of the things I’m most proud of is how welcoming people in Curaçao are. If you’re lost, need directions, or want a recommendation for a good local restaurant, don’t hesitate to ask.
Most people are happy to help. In fact, some of the best experiences you’ll have on the island will probably come from conversations with locals.
A Few Simple Safety Tips
Here are the same tips I would give friends visiting from abroad:
- Rent a car and explore the island.
- Don’t leave valuables visible inside your rental car.
- Take only what you need to the beach.
- Avoid isolated beaches after dark.
- Stay on marked routes when hiking.
- Drink plenty of water when exploring.
- Ask locals for recommendations—they often know the best places.
- Use the same common sense you would use in any unfamiliar destination.
So… Is Curaçao Safe?
Yes.
No destination is completely free from crime, and Curaçao is no exception.
But if you use common sense, take care of your belongings, and stay aware of your surroundings, there’s a very good chance your biggest concern during your trip will be deciding which beach to visit next. The island is known for its friendly people, relaxed atmosphere, and easygoing lifestyle.
Come prepared, stay curious, and don’t let safety concerns stop you from discovering everything Curaçao has to offer. Because once you experience the island beyond the guidebooks, you’ll understand why so many visitors return again and again.
