15 Authentic Things to Do in Curaçao (According to a Local)
Every visitor comes to Curaçao for the sunshine, crystal-clear water, and colorful streets.
And yes, you should absolutely enjoy those. But if you only spend your vacation between your resort, the beach, and a handful of tourist attractions, you’ll leave knowing very little about the island itself.
As someone born and raised in Curaçao, these are the experiences I wish every visitor would have before flying home. Not because they’re famous. But because they’re authentic.
1. Drive Through Banda Bou Without a Destination
Don’t rush from one beach to another. Take the back roads. Drive through villages you’ve never heard of. Stop when you see something interesting.
Banda Bou isn’t just where some of the island’s most beautiful beaches are located—it’s where you’ll experience a slower, more traditional side of Curaçao. Sometimes the best memories come from places you never planned to visit.
2. Eat Where the Parking Lot Is Full of Locals
Forget the restaurant rankings for a day. If you see a modest restaurant with cars filling the parking lot at lunchtime, stop.
That’s usually a better sign than hundreds of online reviews. Traditional dishes like Kabritu Stobá, Keshi Yena, Funchi, and fresh seafood taste even better when you’re surrounded by locals enjoying the same meal.
3. Spend an Evening in Otrabanda
Many visitors walk across the Queen Emma Bridge, take a few photos, and head back.
Slow down.
Otrabanda is one of the island’s most vibrant neighborhoods, filled with murals, local cafés, historic architecture, and stories around every corner. Walk without an itinerary. You’ll discover far more than any guided tour can show you.
4. Watch the Sunset Somewhere Quiet
Not every sunset needs a beach club. Some of the most memorable evenings happen sitting on a cliff, a quiet beach, or simply watching the horizon with a cold drink in hand.
The island has countless places where nature puts on its own show.
5. Learn a Few Words in Papiamentu
Even if it’s only:
- Bon dia (Good morning)
- Bon tardi (Good afternoon)
- Danki (Thank you)
Locals genuinely appreciate the effort.
It’s a small gesture that often starts wonderful conversations.
6. Visit a Local Snack
A “snack” in Curaçao isn’t just a quick bite. It’s part of the culture.
These neighborhood eateries serve everything from fresh fish and barbecue to burgers and local specialties. Some of the island’s best food is found here.
7. Wake Up Early for a Beach
The beaches feel completely different before the crowds arrive.
The water is calm. The light is beautiful. The island is quiet. It’s one of the most peaceful moments you’ll experience.
8. Spend a Sunday Like a Local
Sunday has its own rhythm in Curaçao. Families gather. Friends barbecue.
People head to the beach, enjoy live music, or spend the afternoon relaxing together. It’s less about sightseeing and more about enjoying life.
9. Explore Beyond Jan Thiel and Mambo
These beaches are beautiful, and there’s nothing wrong with visiting them. But they represent only a small part of Curaçao.
Some of the island’s most memorable places are found far from the busiest tourist areas. Be curious enough to explore beyond what’s most familiar.
10. Ask Locals for Recommendations
One conversation can completely change your itinerary.
Ask:
- Where do you eat on Sundays?
- What’s your favorite beach?
- Where would you take visiting friends?
You’ll probably discover places that never appear in travel guides.
11. Visit a Local Market
Whether you’re buying fresh fruit, local spices, or simply walking around, markets offer a glimpse into everyday island life.
They’re full of colors, flavors, and conversations.
12. Try Something You’ve Never Eaten Before
Maybe it’s Iguana Stew. Maybe it’s Lionfish. Maybe it’s Pumpkin Pancakes.
Travel is about discovering new flavors, not ordering what you already know.
13. Don’t Rush
Curaçao has a slower pace than many visitors are used to. Embrace it.
The island isn’t meant to be checked off a list. It’s meant to be experienced.
14. Talk to People
Some of my favorite memories aren’t places.
They’re conversations.
The bartender who recommended a hidden beach.
The fisherman who explained the catch of the day.
The shop owner who shared stories about growing up on the island.
Those moments stay with you long after the vacation ends.
15. Leave With More Than Photos
Anyone can come home with beautiful pictures. The goal is to leave with memories. Learn a few words in Papiamentu. Try unfamiliar food. Take the scenic route.
Meet people. Discover neighborhoods. Because the real Curaçao isn’t something you simply see. It’s something you experience.
Before You Go…
If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this guide, it’s this:
Curaçao is much more than its beaches.
It’s a place with a rich culture, welcoming people, incredible food, and communities that each tell a different story.
The best trips aren’t the ones where you see everything.
They’re the ones where you slow down enough to truly experience where you are.
And that’s the Curaçao I hope you’ll discover.
